AHMEDABAD: Most colleges in the city remained closed on Thursday following the all India bandh call given by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (
ABVP) in support of
Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal Bill against rampant corruption.
"The bandh was successful as most principals of colleges, teachers and students lend their support to the cause of anti-corruption. A big number if students also left college premises to take part in rallies and demonstrations in support of Anna Hazare", national convener of ABVP Kunal Shah said.
Most of the colleges remained closed following the bandh call of ABVP. Many even postponed internal exams in support of the college bandh. The bandh call was unanimous except in three colleges where the student leaders had to argue with the college managements to get the institutes suspend academic activities.
For instance in St Xavier's college, the management told the leaders that students had arrived for their lectures in the morning and hence they cannot close the college. This led to arguments after which the student leaders prompted college students to leave the premises.
In HL College of Commerce, a viva exam which was scheduled on Thursday was postponed following the bandh.
In School of Sciences in Gujarat University (GU), internal written exam was scheduled which was cancelled and postponed as students chose to remain away from the college in support of the bandh.
There were some colleges like the LD Arts College and MG Science which remained closed from morning itself as the students had decided to support the anti-corruption bandh.
It needs mention that the bandh had the tacit support of many college authorities as the ABVP leaders had met them on Wednesday and urged them to support the bandh on moral grounds to give the anti-corruption movement a fillip.
General secretary of ABVP Ravi Desai said that Jan Lokpal Bill needs support and Anna Hazare's arrest was uncalled for and the student community on Thursday has shown that they will take a united stand against anti-corruption.
